Obedience Training (Copy 1)

Repetition

  • 5 minutes a day

  • At random times throughout the day, before opening doors and at street corners or meeting someone

Description The “Sit” command teaches your dog to place their bottom on the ground and remain there until released. It’s one of the most basic and essential obedience cues, useful for creating calm behavior before meals, walks, greetings, or when you need your dog to be still.

Steps Get your dog’s attention with a treat in your hand. Hold the treat close to their nose, then slowly move it up and over their head. As the dog’s head follows the treat, their rear naturally goes down. As soon as their butt hits the ground, say “Sit” and immediately reward them with the treat and praise. Repeat several times, keeping sessions short (5–10 minutes).

Tips Be consistent with the word “sit.” Reward immediately so they associate the action with the word. Avoid pushing their back down—that can confuse or scare them.
