Description
The “Drop It” command teaches your dog to release an object from their mouth on cue—whether it’s a toy, a stick, your shoe, or something dangerous they picked up. This is essential for safety, managing play, and preventing resource guarding.
Benefits
-
Prevents choking or poisoning from harmful items.
-
Helps in safe play with toys (e.g., fetch, tug).
-
Encourages trust and reduces possessiveness.
-
Promotes calm behavior when your dog becomes fixated on an object.
Steps: Option 1: With a Toy (Positive Exchange Method)
-
Start Play: Begin with a toy your dog enjoys (like a tug rope or plush toy).
-
Offer a Trade: While they have the toy in their mouth, say “Drop it,” then present a high-value treat right in front of their nose.
-
Reward When They Let Go: As soon as they drop the toy to get the treat, mark it (“Yes!”) and reward.
-
Return the Toy (Optional): If safe, return the toy after the reward to show that dropping something doesn’t always mean it’s gone forever.
-
Repeat & Add Duration: Practice several times and gradually delay the treat as they understand the command. Also try different objects, some are more difficult to drop than others.
