Repetition
-
5 minutes a day repetition of down
-
For longer downs: While eating dinner, cue your dog to go “Down” on a mat to prevent begging at the table. Use “Down” when guests arrive to prevent jumping.
-
In Public Places (Calm Behavior): At a café, cue “Down” so your dog can settle under your table while you eat. In waiting rooms or outdoor patios, it helps them remain still and calm.
Description The “Down” command tells your dog to lie flat on the ground with their belly touching the floor and elbows resting. This is a foundational obedience behavior that encourages calmness, impulse control, and focus.
Steps
-
Have your dog in a sitting position and hold a high-value treat in your hand.
-
Lure into Down Position: Bring the treat to your dog’s nose to get their attention. Slowly lower the treat straight down to the floor between their front paws. Then, slide the treat out in front of them, forming an “L” shape with your motion. Your dog should follow the treat into a down position.
