Description

The “Come” command is one of the most important and essential cues you can teach your dog. It’s used to have your dog return to you when called, and it is key to ensuring their safety, particularly in situations such as walks, off-leash play, and around potential hazards, ensuring your dog can be called back quickly in any environment.

Benefits

  • Ensures safety in off-leash situations.

  • Helps regain control when a dog is distracted or running away or doing inappropriate things like chewing furniture, jumping or nipping somebody.

  • Builds trust and deepens the handler-dog relationship.

  • Useful in emergencies or when calling your dog indoors or outdoors.

Steps

  1. Get your dog’s attention by calling their name or showing them a high-value treat (something they love, like chicken or cheese).

  2. Hold the treat close to their nose to ensure they’re focused on you.

  3. Give the “Come” Command: Move away a few steps, say “Come!” in a clear, happy, and enthusiastic tone. Use a voice that encourages them to come toward you. You can also use a hand gesture, like patting your thighs or crouching down, to make it more inviting.

  4. As soon as your dog starts moving toward you, praise them immediately with verbal cues like “Good job!” and a treat when they get close. The goal is to reward them for even starting to move toward you. Make it clear that coming to you is always a positive experience. People sometimes show frustration for the dog running away and that won’t bring him back, be fun even if you don’t feel like it, use cheerful high pitch voice.
