Description

  • Daily Life: Useful when greeting guests, during mealtime, or while waiting at a crosswalk. To have the dog remain seated in one place until released with you next to him.

  • Safety: Prevents the dog from running into traffic, jumping on people, or darting through doors.

  • Impulse Control: Helps with self-discipline and calm behavior.

Steps

  • Ask for a Sit: Use a treat to lure the dog’s nose up and back until they sit.

  • Add the Stay Cue: Once seated, hold your hand like a stop sign and say “Stay.”

  • Take One Step Back: Pause, then return and reward. Release the dog with a cue like “Okay.”

  • Build Duration and Distance: Gradually increase how long and how far you go while the dog stays seated.

  • Practice in Different Environments: Add distractions slowly to reinforce behavior in real-life scenarios.
